Geocache Description:

This is a high level Right of Way route on good tracks between Auchinner, Glen Artney and Braeleny, Callander. The route gives superb views of the surrounding hills and the dramatic mountains Ben Vorlich and Stuc a Chroin.

Glen Artney was once a Royal Deer Forest supplying venison to the sovereigns of Scotland. Deer stalking still takes place in the hills between August and March. However this route goes along the right of way across the moorland and will be unaffected by any stalking activity. Dogs should be kept on a lead because of sheep.

Please be aware of prevailing conditions as the route is 14km one way. The tracks are passable on mountain bikes. Be aware of the conditions on the hills and your fitness level. Allow adequate time to complete your chosen route, ensuring you have appropriate clothing, food, drinks and maps with you. Please make sure someone is aware of your route and the approximate time you are due back.

There are many small burns to cross which may present difficulties after prolonged rain. The bridge at Arivurichadich washed away in the 2004 floods. The steel girders still lie on the banks.

The cache is on the Callander side of the river. If you are continuing to Glen Artney or have come that way it is now necessary to either cross the river if coming from Glen Artney or if you intend to continue through to Glen Artney.

The best place to cross the river now appears to be upstream of the bridge. I would suggest making the crossing in two stages; first over the Allt Breac-nic on the left, and then the Allt a'chroin. There are plenty of stones, and it looks as if someone has tried to build a series of proper stepping stones over the Allt a'chroin. In 'ordinary' summer conditions it is possible to cross without getting your boots wet.
If you like life more exciting there is a metal pipe crossing the river as in the photo here.

In spate conditions it could be impossible to cross. If you were to get caught out coming here from the Glen Artney side, it is possible to contour round on the East bank of the Keltie to cross the forestry bridge at the Scout Pool but this is a long and miserable walk and is only for the bold or desperate! -beware.

If you are doing the walk one way, you will need to arrange transport to the end.
