Geocache Description:

The purpose of this cache placement is to educate geocachers and others about things/places of historic interest or value.

This is an Upping Stone. It was used to mount a horse with. I don't know the age or the full history of this one. Normally I do not place or seek caches in urban areas, I just do not feel comfortable with them. However the historic signifiance of such a long forgotton object as an Upping Stone inspired me to obtain specific permission from the landowner for this cache placement. I have left the detail to the cache location very clear so that it should be a quick, easy find. The owner remembers another one that was behind Nickels department store in Gate City. The only other one that I know of in the area is in the Fain family cemetary, the founders of Arcadia near Kingsport, Tn. and it has been relocated from the old Fain plantation. The cache is a camo match box with a log only at the base of the Upping Stone just off the edge of Park street. If you choose not to sign the log, just post a note of your find if you wish.
