This cache is placed near a monument to Bob Jones College. It is a small pill bottle wrapped in cammo tape. It shouldn't be a difficult find, just another taste of local history.
NOTE: This one was originally placed in a small, thorny shrub; but the shrubs have been removed. It has been relocated and should be an easy find. Keep in mind, however, it is a small pill bottle and should not be mistaken for the letterbox that is clearly visible from the street.
I can remember, when I was much younger, hanging out with friends in what was left of the college at the time. We always wondered what the story was and, of course, there were many rumors! Following is a brief history of what happened:
In early April 1925, while on a tip to Florida with his wife, Bob Jones decided to build an orthodox Christian College near Lynn Haven. On April 14, the charter was approved by the circuit court in Panama City, Florida. On December 1, 1926, ground was broken and the college opened on September 12, 1927 with 88 students. However, it was not to last. The Florida land boom had peaked in 1925, and a hurricane in September 1926 further reduced land values. The Great Depression followed. Bob Jones College barely survived bankruptcy and moved to Cleveland, Tennessee in 1933. At the end of World War II, with the enactment of the GI Bill , the college was forced to seek a new location and build a new campus. In 1947, the school moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where it was re-named Bob Jones University.
When I decided to place this cache, the fate of the FSU Panama City Campus was at risk due to similar circumstances. Fortunately, it has been spared closure at this time. Let's hope it does not ultimately meet with the same fate as Bob Jones College in years to come!
