THE BAIN CAIRN
Thomas Bain, a master road builder, was responsible for putting Hout Bay on the map. Between 1884 and 1898 he was responsible for constructing the (now) Victoria Road which opened up an easier route to enable farmers and fishermen to get their produce to Cape Town markets.
At the age of 16 he helped his father, Andrew Geddes Bain, build the beautiful Bain’s Kloof Pass. He then went ahead and opened up the Cape Colony by building another 23 passes.
He died in September ???? at the age of ?? and is buried at St Thomas’ Church, Rondebosch.
The Bain Cairn was built to commemorate the Centenary of his death.
Do take a moment to look at the beautiful seascape with the imposing Klein Leeukoppie to your left.
