This is a simple cache with an amazing story.
Look to the hill above the church.
In 1984, about 65 miles north of Charleston, WV, the first trio of crosses was erected by Reverand Bernard Coffindaffer of Craigsville, WV. He was a businessman turned evangalist who spent a fortune erecting trios of crosses beside roads in 29 states and the Phillipines and Zambia. He was a Methodist minister and a World War II veteran who fought with the Marines at IwoJima. He garnered national attention with his quest to cover the world with the trios of one gold cross flanked by two blue crosses. He was featured on the cover of the Washington Post and in a lengthy National Radio piece. There was a documentary made for public television called "Point Man for God".
Rev. Coffindaffer spent more than $3 million over 10 years on the crosses. In an interview shortly before he died, he said he had erected 1842 cross clusters. He estimated he spent $843 per cluster, wiping out money he made after selling a coal-washing mill. He said in a 1991 interview that a spirit appeared to him after open-heart surgery in 1982 and told him to begin erecting the "crosses of mercy".
Reverand Bernard Coffindaffer died on October 8, 1993 of a heart attack. He was 68.
FTF congratulations go to White Feather. Way to go!
