Un peu d'histoire ...
Le beffroi de Mons est le plus récent des beffrois de Belgique et de France. "El catiau" comme on l'appelle affectueusement à Mons fut élevé au XVIIe siècle, après l'écroulement de la Tour à l'horloge (1661).
Ce beffroi, classé depuis le 15 janvier 1936, relève du Patrimoine majeur de Wallonie et est classé au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco depuis le 1er décembre 1999. Il est le seul du pays construit en style baroque. Mesurant 87 mètres, il domine la ville de Mons, elle-même construite sur une colline. L'édifice ne compte pas moins de 365 marches... Le haut de la tour renferme quant à lui 49 cloches.
Victor Hugo, dans une lettre à sa femme, le décrivait de la manière suivante : "...figure-toi une énorme cafetière, flanquée au-dessous du ventre de quatre théières moins grosse. Ce serait laid si ce n'était grand. La grandeur sauve..."
