Geocache Description:

The cache is a small cylinder with a number of small swaps. From GZ you can look across the river to where the old Railway Station stood for many years servicing the Western Line.

The Great Northern Railway began simply as a railway to the Charters Towers gold field. Because of uncertainty as to how long it would survive, the railway was designed and built cheaply. The line was approved as far as the top of the Haughton range on 7th August 1877, five years after Charters Towers was discovered, but construction was slow, opening to Reid River on 20th December 1880. The line up the range to Mingela (then called Ravenswood Junction) opened on 9th November, 1881, to Macrossan on 24th July 1882 and to Charters Towers on 4th December 1882. Traffic on the line grew far beyond expectations as the years rolled on. (information courtesty of QR History).

The Reluctant Companion has vivid memories of childhood trips to Townsville from Charters Towers on the Railway. This was a four hour trip each way - leaving the Towers at 4.00a.m. and arriving in Townsville at 8.00a.m. The highlight was the stop at Reid River Refreshment Rooms where thick corned meat sandwiches and sweet tea in enamel mugs were served to the weary travellers.
