Wauconda is a lovely village. It has over 12,000 residents, great schools and a wonderful park district. You can visit beautiful Bangs Lake for many relaxing outdoor activities. There are nice restaurants and quaint shopping. Wauconda is surrounded by many superb forest preserves with miles of well maintained trails. You won’t be using any of them to find this cache.
This is Wauconda’s Wild Side.
On the northern outskirts of Wauconda is the Singing Hills Forest Preserve. It has drinking water, a comfort station, acres of oak savanna and access to the Millenium Trail. From the parking lot at Fish Lake Rd. you can walk or ride your bike or horse north towards Volo and the Marl Flat Forest Preserve or south to the Lakewood Forest Preserve and beyond. You won’t be near any of these fine amenities.
The wild side of Singing Hills has Monahan Lake, a wetlands complex that is a nesting site for the Sandhill Crane. You may also find Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Least Bitterns and Pied-billed Grebes in the area, in addition to the usual waterfowl. You are likely to see any number of wild animals here, including deer, rabbits, raccoons, coyotes, red fox, and gray squirrels. If you look around you the signs of life in the wild are everywhere.
While some of the area is leased out as farmland, you will not need to intrude on the agricultural section. If it is tame, civilized or cultivated, you don’t need to walk on it. If it is on the wild side you are in the right place.
You can leave your car at the parking coordinates listed below. You may need to climb over the gate, but do not worry as the land is part of the Forest Preserve. The gate is there to keep out cars, not people. Walk on the overgrown path between the fields until you get close to the cache. Then you are on your own. There are many ways to get there, some easier than others. It may be wet, it may be dry. It will be wild.
