Geocache Description:

Welcome to Maides Park, a 15-acre recreational area near downtown that offers athletic fields, a playground, picnic shelters, a community center, and good old open spaces. There are also some impressive live oaks growing along one of the borders of the property and again in the woods next to the fields. As you approach the woods (and you will, because your GPS will tell you to do so!), let your eyes rest on that beautiful oak with all of the moss all over it. Isn’t that a sight?

Continue to follow your GPS until you reach the edge of the woods. Now take a look through the trees, shrubs, and brambles to discover why we’ve brought you here. If you enter the woods via a small foot trail, you will be led to the cache in a fairly easy manner and you won’t be stepping on anything you’ll regret. If you opt to bushwhack, please watch your every step and respect this area like your Mama would want you to!

We had an ulterior motive when we hid this cache. We’re considering approaching the city and offering to volunteer the services of local/visiting geocachers to help with very basic plant management/clearance in order to bring some dignity back to this area. It’s obvious that there has been no maintenance here for a long time and, according to the Parks people with whom we’ve spoken, this area is not technically part of the park or the responsibility of the Parks department. We’re thinking that an annual or bi-annual CITO-type event would be a neat idea. We’d like to know if other geocachers agree!
