Geocache Description:

The little parish church of Byrness is set beside the A68 just below Catcleugh Reservoir.

The present church was built by voluntary subscription at the end of the 18th century, with the rector Lewis Dutens contributing £1200. Hodgson gives a date of 1793 for its construction but 1796 is inscribed above the doorway, presumably indicating when the building was completed. It was initially established as a chapel of ease within Elsdon Parish and did not become the centre of a parish in its own right until 1884.

The eastern of the two windows on the south of the nave contains an interesting stained glass window commemorating ‘Men women and children who died during the construction of the reservoir at Catcleugh erected by their fellow workmen and friends 1903’ with a scene of reservoir construction including a narrow-gauge railway.

Once you have found the cache go to the window to the left of the door from here you will be able to see the memorial stain glass window. If you want a closer view of the window, and the inside of the church, a key for the door is available at the Byrness Hotel.
