This Earthcache is located at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Pkwy close to Linville Falls. The coordinates will take you to the trail entrance. The hike is a 30 minute round-trip moderate hike on a marked trail and is family-friendly. Once on top of Flat Rock, follow the yellow arrows and it will lead you across and back down the mountain. Enjoy the views of Linville Valley below and Grandfather Mountain to your right.
"Flat Rock" is a large outcrop of Quartzite mixed with ribbons of white quartz. There are severe climate conditions that limit plant growth and soil formation on top of Flat Rock.
Once on top of Flat Rock, there are "bathtubs" or shallow basins in the rock that may be filled with water. They are probably caused by wind, rain, and the cold temperatures. Rainwater is collected in small cracks within the rock and that causes the rocks to loosen and then split in the winter when it freezes. Once the rock splits, larger pieces emerge from the cracks and strong winds cause these holes to deepen and become round.
In order to assure your safety, please take extra precautions when there are strong wind-gusts present on top of Flat Rock and please stay on the marked trails.
