9 cache wander around Packwood house & Church
Max’s Favorite walk for the past 9 years is captured in at series of 9 caches on a sort of figure of 8 walk of just over 3 miles on pleasant paths and country lanes around Packwood House a stately timber-framed Tudor manor house owned, since 1941, by the National Trust, situated near Lapworth, Warwickshire. It is a Grade I listed building. It has a wealth of tapestries and fine furniture, but is most famous for its yew garden (topiary) in which the clipped trees are said to represent the Sermon on the Mount.
The famous Yew Garden containing over 100 trees was laid out in the mid 17th century by John Fetherston, the lawyer. The clipped yews are supposed to represent 'The Sermon on the Mount'. Twelve great yews are known as the 'Apostles' and the four big specimens in the middle are 'The Evangelists'. A tight spiral path lined with box hedges climbs a hummock named 'The Mount'. The single yew that crowns the summit is known as 'The Master'. The smaller yew trees are called 'The Multitude' and were planted in the 19th century to replace an orchard.
Behind the house is a substantial lake, and opposite the front entrance is the impressive Packwood Avenue, a tree lined public footpath which runs straight for around a kilometer through grounds also owned by the National Trust.
The series is a mix of Micro & Small containers; we do hope to add an additional circuit tagged on to this route, which will have medium/large containers to encourage swaps.
Please can we ask you to do this as a walking circuit to avoid parking at various spots around the route, this will prevent any nuisance being caused to locals and preserving the integrity of the caches – thank you.
The start and parking is by Packwood House if visiting the house use the car park, otherwise natural parking bays are available between Grove la & Packwood Ho.
Please replace caches exactly as found, in particular the slightly unusual ones!!! Oh and take a good pen!
Gateway - Micro
To start the walk leave the car park or parking bays and walk up the road away from Packwood house, pass grove lane on your left and shortly take footpath on left to pass through the metal kissing gate in to field.
