Welcome to Hamlet Traditional Cache

Geo13's recent abundance of Richmond County caches (his 'Country Roads' and 'Richmond County Signs' series of caches) has inspired this set of Richmond County caches. Although we have placed caches seemingly all over the state, there's plenty of history right here at home!!
You are looking for a regular camo'd container at one of the many signs welcoming you to our fair town. Probably best not to search on Sundays.
The following was reprinted from the book ' Talking Turkey And Other Stories of North Carolina's Oddly Named Places' by Jamie Cox (Down Home Press, 2000)
The naming of Hamlet in 1873 was a tree-jumping event, by accounts. This community was in the Sandhills of Richmond County. John Shortridge, formerly of England and transplanted to the Sandhills, was talking with three friends, Laughlin McKinnon, Thomas Steele, and Elisha Terry.
Shortridge enthusiastically spoke about the numbers of people moving into the settlement and told his friends that before long the place would be large enough to be called a hamlet.
In England, Shortridge went on to explain, a hamlet was a growing cluster of families and houses well on the way to becoming a full-fledged village.
We agree, said his friends, and furthermore, we think we should start calling this place Hamlet. To celebrate this occasion, the men planted a small sycamore tree in an area later known as Bridge's triangle and jumped over it for luck.
The tree stood in Hamlet until 1946 when it was cut down to make room for construction.
Note the train on the city sign. Hamlet's strategic location halfway between New York City and Miami, Florida, made it an important stopping point and railroad hub, especially for the SeaBoard Air Line Railroad. It is still the location of the National Railroad Museum.
