Geocache Description:

A fun multi-cache loaded with Black Mountain history!

This cache is a replacement -- and an update -- of Grey Eagle's YEAR NEAR HERE cache which was recently archived. The old cache was lots of fun, but contained a hiccup or two which made it hard to find without a mandatory call to a previous finder.

At each stop you will be looking for years -- mainly on plaques and historical markers. Use the years to solve find the coordinates which will enable you to continue your quest. Not all stops have convenient parking so you may have to park elsewhere and stroll a little. You will eventually be looking for an Altoids tin large enough for a logbook and small trade items and/or trackables. Though you can definitely complete the entire cache in under an hour I recommend you take your time and enjoy some of the stops.

Stop 1
At the above listed coordinates you are looking for a plaque; it is located just a few feet from the road. Add the two consecutive years found here, and then subtract 107 to get ABCD. Add all three years found here and subtract 4100 to get EFGH. The next stop will be found at N 35° AB.CD5 W 82° EF.GH1.

Stop 2
At the coordinates you calculated directly above you are looking for a camp sign. Add 1796 to the year found here to get ABCD. Subtract 293 from the year found here to get EFGH. The next stop will be found at N 35° AB.CD9 W 82° EF.GH9.

Stop 3
At the coordinates you calculated directly above you are looking for an historical marker. Add 1942 to the easily readable year found here to get ABCD. Subtract 276 from the very tiny year found here [You will almost definitely have to get up close and personal with the markers at all stops with "tiny" years.] to get EFGH. The next stop will be found at N 35° AB.CD3 W 82° EF.GH5.

Stop 4
At the coordinates you calculated directly above you are looking for an historical marker. Add the easily readable year to the tiny year, and then subtract 117 to get ABCD. Subtract 61 from easily readable year found here to get EFGH. The next stop will be found at N 35° AB.CD7 W 82° EF.GH2.

Stop 5
At the coordinates you calculated directly above you are looking for an historical marker. Add the first easily readable year to the tiny year, and then subtract 211 to get ABCD. Add the last two digits of the first easily readable year to the second easily readable year to get EFGH. The next stop will be found at N 35° AB.CD4 W 82° EF.GH0.

Stop 6
This is the most complicated stop! At the coordinates you calculated directly above you are looking for a King. Keep looking until you see a statue or memorial or something that references "King". From the King look straight ahead at the large circle. The year located directly below the tree is IJKL. Approximately twenty feet to the right of the King is a doorway; there should be plaques on both sides. The year to the left of the doorway is MNOP and the year to the right of the doorway is QRST. Continue down the portico -- covered walkway -- for about 50 feet and the year found here is UVWX. The next stop will be found at N 35° (I+M+U)(W-L).(U+X+M+L)PQ W 82° QR.ST(J-Q).

Stop 7
At the coordinates you calculated directly above you are looking for an historical marker. EST = ABCD, the next year mentioned is EFGH, and the tiny year is IJKL. The next stop will be found at N 35° CL.B(D+E)J W 82° IB.AF(L-H).

Stop 8
At the coordinates you calculated directly above you are looking for a plaque. March A, BCDE. The physical cache will be found at N 35° E(D-E).DEC W 82° BD.(B+B)(A-A)(E-B).

Please be aware that all of the numbers above in parentheses are discrete units. Do not multiply them by each other!!!

I hope you enjoy your time in Black Mountain!
