Geocache Description:

Troop 519 of Woburn has used the north fields at Horn Pond for camping for many years. This cache was originally set up as a compass course for the younger scouts. Please be respectful of the area.

Orienteering Merit Badge:
The Orienteering Merit Badge has long been a staple of Boy Scouts since the beginning. It requires the scout to learn how to use a compass and map to plot courses and navigate his way around.

Requirement 3B:
In the field, show how to take a compass bearing and follow it.
Requirement 4C:
Explain the meaning of declination. Tell why you must consider declination when using map and compass together.

The Cache:
At the posted coordinates you will find an orange camping matchstick container. In that container you will find compass directions and distances for you to travel. (See picture for exact location.) Please write down those directions and distances and put the paper and container back before starting the compass course.

Nearby you will find a fire circle (N42 28.464 W71 09.864) which is the starting point. Set your compass and pace off your distance until you reach the first point. Repeat until you have gone through all the points. The final should not be hard to spot if you use your geo-sense.

Good luck and good caching,
Loch Cache & Troop 519
