The Hawl Over was first used by natives to portage from Cape Negro harbour and their wintering areas up the Clyde River to the waters of the Eel Bay and Port Latour Harbour and beyond. Later, it is said that the early French camped there. The first canal was completed in 1828. Over the years, many repairs have had to be done due to damage by storms and time with the last major work being done in 1935. Small boats are still able to navigate the channel, though not at low tide.
The view from the bridge to the east is Cape Negro Harbour while looking west, one sees the waters of the Eel Bay of Port Latour Harbour. There is lots of parking space near the old wharf with only a short walk to the cache
