Geocache Description:

Easily find the answers by walking round Ambleside Heritage Trail to locate the well hidden final. Ambleside Heritage Trail leaflet with useful map is available from TIC (start) and library or print image below. Not necessary, may be helpful. Change of final GZ, July 2012.

Can be found in snow. There is multiple redundancy in answers as some will be unavailable over time.

Ambleside Civic Trust have produced a leaflet called 'Ambleside Heritage Trail', which takes you through some of the interesting parts of Ambleside, especially old Ambleside, highlighting buildings of interest, including How Head (AHT05). This is the oldest building in Ambleside, and uses stone from the old Roman Fort, and river cobbles. There has been a settlement since pre-Roman times, Ambleside you see is largely Victorian. A fort beside Borrans Park, Galava Fort, was built south of Ambleside by the Romans.
The Ambleside Civic Trust have placed most of the plaques and we should thank them. Ambleside Heritage Trail leaflet (80p) with useful map showing all places you could visit and further information about them, is available from TIC at the start WM6EZD and library WMCGD or print image below. Not necessary but may be helpful.

Route
The Ambleside Heritage Trail starts at Market Cross outside the TIC. Go along North Road across High Stock bridge to turn right up Peggy Hill. At Ash Tree Cottage go right past cottages up Fair View Road to Walton Mount and Old School House, to find St Anne's former church. Go down Chapel Hill past Dwarf Hall, circumnavigating How Head, to top of Smithy Brow. Down to Rydal Road past Golden Rule, The Old House and Victorian post box. Head towards Bridge House, passing car park on other side of Rydal Road. Cross Stock Beck by Low Stock bridge and go up Bridge Street to emerge on to North Road again. Return to Market Cross.
From here down to Dodds Corner at the top of Compston Road, and down the row of Victorian shop fronts to Zeffirellis cinema. Down Vicarage Road to St Mary's church with spire. Out of churchyard past White Platts to Church Street. Up Church Street passing former Police Station and Victorian boarding houses. At top on left is Oxfam shop, another John Kelsick property. Opposite is Stamp House and Greggs Bakery. Left in to Market Place where market hall and old courthouse are. Salutation Hotel is at top, across North Road from TIC.
