This was the first cache I set. Found with my family many years ago. We got from our dad our "where does this road go...?" mindset and have found some interesting things over the years. short hike to river, one stream crossing. I've dug up some new information, and may now know what this boiler was for.
Seneca Lake was controlled by the Ahmeek Mining Co. A pumphouse provided water to the fire hydrants of Ahmeek by way of 6000' of 6" pipe. A 1914 Annual report shows a new pumphouse was built to also supply water to the Ahmeek #3 and #4 Shafts (located just to the west of Mohawk). Google Earth shows a straight opening heading from the boiler back to Seneca Lake (the ditch/stream crossing). In 1946 the C&H Annual Report (C&H bought the Ahmeek mining co.) shows the removal of a pipe from Seneca Lake to the Gratiot River. It is suspected that there was a pump here at the river to pump water back up to Seneca Lake if the lake level got too low in dry periods. The lake had enough water to supply the hydrants, but with the need of the mines (boilers and drills) the lake, with it's limited inlet (the Seneca #1 mine took most of it) would have problems meeting the demand.
