Easy access rocky outcrop overlooking Simon’s Town with superb views in all directions - can be completed comfortably in under an hour.
Park either at the trail head at S 34 11.050 E 18 24.891 or at an alternative (somewhat safer?) nearby location adjacent to the Pinehaven houses near the start of the road to Kleinplaas Dam at S 34 10.978 E 18 24.888.
Follow an old jeep trail heading SE towards the rocky outcrop which forms the summit of Red Hill (256m). After 5 minutes or so and around S 34 11.148 E 18 25.031, the trail becomes indistinct.
Keep roughly straight ahead passing carefully over and around the fynbos as appropriate and head for some large burnt tree trunks visible from a distance at S 34 11.244 E 18 25.118.
Pass around the trunks and across a flat grassy area heading for a small col to the left (north) of the summit ridge. At the top of the col at S 34 11.313 E 18 25.187 (222m) turn right (south) and make your way with an easy (but careful) short rock hop up to the top of the ridge.
Once at or near the top head SE for the short distance to the summit beacon.
The cache, a small white pharmaceutical container, is hidden almost immediately below the beacon in a niche behind some small rocks.
Moving a few metres to the west of the summit affords views down into the upper part of Baviaanskloof (meaning Valley of baboons) with its two waterfalls (only the upper one visible from this point) and indeed its troop of resident baboons increasingly notorious (along with the Smitswinkel troop) for regular food raids into Simon’s Town and surrounding areas.
