Beavers in Brunswick! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

SandysRangers: I went for a walk in this park today and saw that the tree that had housed this cache was cut down. I had to dig through the pieces of trunk to get the cache out. Needless to say it is archived. Thanks to all who looked! Sandy

Geocache Description:

Park at the Brunswick Nature Center or in the adjacent shopping center parking lot.

Beavers have been spotted living in Brunswick Lake! They are most likely living in a bank rather than a lodge built with sticks.
Did you know that beavers manage downed trees and organize them to control downstream flooding naturally? Look for trees with their bark girdled and small trees gnawed off to a point showing where they have chewed. These are mostly seen at the furthest point out near the lake.

Did you know--
Beavers live in remote areas away from predators and in family groups. Their body’s sleek shape makes diving and swimming away from predators graceful and easy. They have a special respiratory and cardiovascular system enabling large amounts of oxygen to be stored in the lungs, blood, muscles to let them dive deep and stay underwater for up to 15 minutes. They gnaw at trees to both sharpen their teeth and cut down trees for their dams.

* Their Eyes have a third eyelid as protection from water. Its called a Nictitating membrane.

*The beaver has two layers of Fur that keep their skin dry when underwater

* Their Tail acts as a rudder in the water and as a balancing prop on dry land. The tail can also be used to radiate excess heat from the body and store fat when food is scarce. It’s a myth that beavers pack mud with their tails, but they do slap the water as an alarm system when predators are near.

* Their Forefeet are used to pick up and hold branches, dig canals, and scoop up and pack mud from the bottom of the lake.

Now that you know a little bit about beavers, visit the Nature Center here to learn more about wildlife and see the exhibits. Restrooms and water available.

You’re looking for a medium sized camouflaged container with room for small trade items. Cache is located 6 feet off the trail.
Please be respectful of this environment. No bushwacking please. Off trail hiking is damaging to the environment and prohibited.

Note- Park hours are between sunrise and dark. Thanks to the Brunswick Parks & Recreation Department for allowing the use of this park for educational caching.
