This is one of a series on Churchill Island & surroundings, ideally suited to cyclists – Phillip Island has very good bike tracks and ample parking is just down the road at the Tourist Information Centre. Churchill Island is inaccessible from 5.30pm to 9am, so plan carefully and double-check signboards to ensure you don’t get locked in overnight! Access to the walking tracks (& the caches) is free; however there is a charge if you choose to enter the visitor centre & historic settlement.
The cache location offers excellent views, including a building registered by the National Trust as “a bizarre twentieth century exercise in a simplified and laterally compressed version of the Lombardic Romanesque”
The tower was part of the St. Paul's Training School for Problem Boys, which closed in 1973. Many sources state that the home was established in 1928; however a history of the Church of England in Victoria states that it was bought by the Mission of St James and St John in 1926 and reopened in 1928, after the former Newhaven Boy's Home was closed “through an adverse report of the Charities Board” – this version is supported by a 1925 newspaper report.
