Riddiford Gardens
The following is taken from the Wotzon.com website: Lower Hutt’s beautiful Riddiford Gardens provide a quiet haven for shoppers and visitors to the city centre. The gardens outdate almost all the surrounding structures, which were built mostly in the 1950s. In the 1920s, enterprising mayor W T Strand ensured a large block of land in the city was bought “for the use, enjoyment and recreation of the inhabitants”. The area was to be known as Riddiford Park, named in recognition of the prominent Riddiford family who had been generous in paying for the new Riddiford Baths on the site.

Over the next few years, the park was planted with native and exotic trees, flowers and herbs. Community facilities, such as a dental clinic, Plunket rooms and a croquet club were built within its boundaries. An aviary, built in 1926, is one of the few early buildings that remain to this day.

The park was later renamed Riddiford Gardens, and now provides delightful walks under pergolas, over quaint bridges that criss-cross Opahu Stream, and through rose and flower gardens. The fragrant herb gardens are specially designed for the visually impaired. There’s a playground for children close by the aviary, a large fountain, and at the Myrtle Street end, the Tutukiwi Orchid and Fern House and the Gibbes Watson Conservatory provide climates for more exotic displays.

About the cache
The cache is a 200ml camo'd Sistema container with room for small swaps, trackables, etc. When placed it contained a plastic dinosaur, a key name tag, some Superglue, a logsheet, pencil and sharpener. Please bring a writing implement in case the one in place goes missing.

About the location
Riddiford Gardens is a short walk from the Lower Hutt City Centre, where there is plenty of pay-as-you-go parking - However, right outside the Lower Hutt City Council in Laings Road there is limited (both in spaces and in time allocation!) free parking.

The gardens is a very popular place for individuals and families to visit, and they can appear from many directions and without warning so ensure maximum subterfuge when undertaking your search!

Please make sure the cache is replaced *exactly* as found as we don't want the cache to go MIA...

I am using a log sheet for all Geocachers to record their discoveries and comments. Please let me know when the logsheet is nearing maintenance time and I will supply a new sheet.
