Geocache Description:

historical cache

You may have been to "Indian Ovens".
Here is a cache at another oven at Green Lakes.
Our hint will give you the time on the clock face.
We worked with Jim Semar head of the park and now have
park permit 015 to place this cache on state park land.
You might not have to park on park land to find the cache.
Added on 2/14/10 We now know just a bit more about the oven.
Linda Ryan is the local history librarian nearby at the Fayetteville Free Library, she helped us to gather a bit of info regarding Green Lakes State Park. Dick Almquist son of former park superintendant Arvin Almquist has worked with Linda to create a record of life at the park almost 80 years ago. Dick recalls gathering trash as a youth and trucking it down the steep incline east of Tulip Hill to be incinerated here many years ago.
Civillan Conservation Corps workers were used for years to built and upgrade the park. They were led for years by Arvin who also saved many pictures and kept notes of the day to day workings of the park. The days of parklife were so interesting I milled for hours over the info amassed in the local history section of the library. The site for the "oven" was chosen on Nov.24th 1934 and it was first used the following spring.
Amongst the notes was the mention of a 26 inch 8 and 1/4 pound trout caught on April 1st 1933 and the plans being dropped to have a casino created here in 1936.
One of the more interesting items of note is the fact that much of the materials to create the park were brought here from afar, sands from Sylvan Beach as an example. Also the lumber and stone for the buildings and beach areas.
