ricordare l'evento. In seguito sorsero i primi dubbi.
lapide in memoria.
pisani cari a Galileo. Portatevi una penna. La cache ha posto solo
per il logbook. Le coordinate finali sono:
N 43
42.[(6xAxB)+(CxF)-10]
E 010

THE
MISTERY OF GALILEO GALILEI BIRTH HOUSE:
The
identification of Galileo Galilei birth house was for a long time a
puzzle. The reason of such an uncertainty is the lack of a birth
register on those times as we mean today. The only source of
biographical information was, some times, the register of the
baptisms in the parish where he was baptized. Galileo was born on
February 15th 1564. His baptism certificate, occurred noly few days
after his birth, as it was the use on those times, reports that he
was baptized in the church of Saint Andrea, without mentioning the
actual place of birth. For a long time it was believed that Galileo
was baptized in the church of Saint Andrea in Chinzica, that was in
the city fortress. So certain appeared his birth place, that, in
the event of the third century since his birth, in 1864, a plate
was placed on the wall of the fortress to remember his birth. Later
on the first doubts arose. As a matter of fact it would have been
possible to baptize Galileo in the church of Saint Andrea in
Chinzica only if his father was in the army, but Vincenzo Galilei,
his father, was a musician and he was never a soldier.
During the
following years it was found a document in which the father
Vincenzo was renting the house of Sir Bocca, in via dei Mercanti,
just during the period in which Galileo was born. It was believed,
then, that Galileo was actually born in that house, where a second
plate was placed in memory. There was a problem, though. The Bocca
house, in fact, was in that part of the town that is under the
jurisdiction of the parish of Saint Michael and, then, there was an
incongruity with the baptism certificate.
Only
recently, on 1965, Giorgio Del Guerra proposed a theory that is the
most accredited nowadays. In fact in the time of Galileo the moms
to be were used to give birth in the house of their parents. Del
Guerra identifies, then, the birth house of Galileo in the mother
house of the Ammannati, in via Giusti. This theory is also
supported by the fact that the house was under the jurisdiction of
the parish of Saint Andrea "Fuori le Mura" (literally out of the
walls). It seems then solved the mystery of Galileo Galilei birth
house.
THE
CACHE:
The cache was
placed on the day of Saint Ranieri, the patron saint of Pisa. The
nominal coordinates will bring you to the first stage. You'll find
yourself in front of the gate of the Scotto garden (Giardino
Scotto), that was formerly the new Fortress of Pisa, where it was
believed for long to have been the birth place of Galilei. On the
left of the gate you will find the opening hours of the garden.
Take note of the opening hours of the months of July and August
(Luglio and Agosto in italian), which we call A, and the closing
hours, which we call B.
Then go to
the second stage. You will be in front of Bocca House, where
Galilei's family was living during the period of his birth. You
will find a stone plate that remembers the presence of Galileo. C
will be the number of letters "G" in the written, while D is the
number of letters "B".
Finally go to
the third stage, which is the Ammannati House, where we believe
Galileo was born. Here you will find another stone plate
remembering the event. There will be some flags. The number of
flags will be E. In front of the Ammannati House, at about 15-20
meters, you will find a street lamp pole. The number of lamps
belonging to the pole will be F. The cache is placed in one of the
many places dear to Galileo. Bring you own pen. The cache has room
only fort the logbook. The final coordinates are:
N 43
42.[(6xAxB)+(CxF)-10]
E 010
