Geocache Description:

Coola Outstation is situated in Canunda National Park on the Limestone Coast.

Coola Outstation came into being when the late Captain John Ellis, in the mid 1850’s, acquired a strip of land between Lake Bonney and the sea to compliment his large holding, namely the Benara Estate. Due to ‘coast disease’, caused by the lack of copper and cobalt, the stock had to be moved every two to four months. This necessitated the building of the Coola Outstation to house the boundary riders and stockmen who would care for the stock and shift them further inland to the disease free areas of Benara. The Benara head station was called Coola and the furthest outstation was Coola Outstation. Occupation of the outstation began in 1865 and continued until 1950, with the first family taking up residence in 1875. Built by hand in 1863, with stone quarried from the nearby Mt Elephant and mortar made on site, the 10.5 m x 5.4 m building comprised two rooms, match board floor, paling roof, framed doors and windows and stone mantle pieces. The verandah was partitioned and ceiled, with posts set on stone foundations and a paling roof. A windlass was built nearby and comprehensive stables and a chaff room were situated a further 250 metres south. You are looking for a 200 ml Sistema that is well hidden. A standard road car should be able to access Coola Outstation with careful driving. The track in is rocky in parts, but should be fine with sensible wheel placement. If you have a 4WD, there are other tracks all around this area that are just waiting for you to explore.
