Indiana Spirit Quest #680:"Building Our Heritage" Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Car54: This area is MUCH more overgrown than it has ever been and is no longer a good place for a cache. I searched thoroughly for the container and did not find it. It is time for this one to go.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #680

"Building Our Heritage"

Welcome to Burton Cemetery, located in Wabash Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

This small cemetery, less than 2 acres, is often missed by those traveling to the nearby building materials store. Yet buried here are veterans who helped build something more lasting than lumber, stone and cement.

The earliest burial recorded in this cemetery was Frances Rock, who died Jan. 4, 1831 at the age of 27 years and we observed one marker with a date as recent as 2003.

There are many veterans buried here, from a variety of conflicts. We found 2 Arthurs - one from the Navy:

and one from the Army:

We noted several Civil War veterans, including companies from both Indiana and Ohio. It is even more unusual to find a Revolutionary War veteran this far west.

Cornelius Morris was born October 2, 1759 in Augusta County, Virginia and was living in Maryland at the time of the Revolution. Cornelius served as a private in the Maryland Continental line. He is listed in the Archives of Maryland Vol.18 Muster Roll and served as wagoner from January to July, 1781. Cornelius married Sarah Dudley in 1788 in Maryland and the couple moved to Ohio, where Cornelius received a pension for his service in the Maryland Continental Army. The couple had 8 children and at some point moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where Cornelius died August 6, 1834.

(Information taken from Tippecanoe County Area Genealogical Society article written by Peggy Reen.)

The cemetery entrance is off CR300W, also known as Klondike Road. There is a paved spur from the big box store parking lot that provides close parking to the back of the cemetery, which is not fenced. Please be aware of your surroundings as this location is very public. The container is a match safe with log only. Please bring your own pencil/pen. The cache is not located near a grave. Do not disturb monuments. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. You must sign the cache log to claim a find. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.

CEMETERY HOURS ARE DAWN TO DUSK. FIND LOGS ON THIS CACHE THAT INDICATE NIGHT CACHING WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT NOTICE!
