Geocache Description:

This is a short walk up the hill at the end of the street by the same name. May need to bring Geocaching Pry bar (IE flat head screwdriver).

The Potomac creek was sight to some early native people. In 1996-1997 two small villages were found and wood carbon dated to early 1300’s or late 1200. The two villages were set up in a circle pattern, these two sites would have supported about 500 people which would have been a good starting population for which to grow a bigger population.
Potomac creek also empties into the Potomac River at Crows Nest which was called Marlborough Point. At Marlborough Point stood the first Stafford County Court house and docks to load and unload goods on to ships. Potomac Creek had an abundance of fish and they could be caught all the time. There were the Patawomeck Indians which had at least 10 villages, each consisting of 2 to 100 long houses. It was here that Pocahontas was kidnapped and taken to Jamestown.
The town of Marlborough was created in 1691 after the House of Burgesses passed an act requiring each county to establish a public port. The port for Stafford County and the town of Marlborough had a very short existence as the town was remote and inaccessible. After the county courthouse burned in 1714, the town was left to decay. Later, Stafford born George Mason, author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, studied here with his uncle, John Mercer, Marlborough's leading landowner.
