Geocache Description:

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE replace this carefully. It should not be easily spotted by the casual passer by. You SHOULD have to look for it. If replaced carelessly, it is easily spotted by non-geocachers, leaving it vulnerable.

It continues my series "Oh No!" It's all a bit of fun and these "Oh No!" caches are not always what they seem (although some are......) Remember, caching is fun. Some caches are a real challenge. Some are easy. Some are straightforward. Some are not what they seem. Some are tongue in cheek. This is easy, not necessarily what it seems and DEFINITELY tongue in cheek.

I have given this a 1 / 1 rating because I believe that it is probably reachable by a wheelchair user (indeed they may find it easier to spot).

St Mary's is the big building in the middle of Hitchin. It has bells on it and they clang a lot on Sunday mornings.

From time to time members of the public get to climb the tower and have a good look around from up there. It's well worth the climb, although it's not so high as some churches. You may also get the chance to have a go on the bells at the same time. Oh boy is that fun!

I'd like to be able to say that you can see Pink Paisley Towers from there. But you can't.

Seriously though, this church is steeped in history and has the interesting honour of having been destroyed by an earthquake in 1298 A.D.. You would have thought that they would have built it out of sterner stuff at that time, since it had already been blown down by a "great wind" in 1115 A.D. It is rather a beautiful old church and until 2007 was one of the stages for Hitchin's annual "Rhythms of the World" festival. If you do this cache and are interested do go in and have a look. The history is documented on paddle boards hanging on the seating at the back of the church.

It is not necessary to access the church yard to retrieve this cache.

And PLEASE. Stealth. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! And take care when replacing it too, Please take care, I don't want to keep having to buy tupperware. I mean 35mm film canisters. Doh!

I have now had to replace this cache for the 3rd time.
