Geocache Description:

This is a micro cache, quick, easy walk to cache.

This is Cache # 4 of a series of caches,

“A Cache A Day While On Vaca” – “Enfield Overlook”

Quabbin Reservoir, one of the largest man-made public water supplies in the United States, required the flooding and dissolution of four towns. Today along with the Wachusett Reservoir, it is the primary water supply for Boston, Massachusetts.

On the plaque at this overlook they showcase two pictures the first one taken in 1927. This picture provides an excellent view of the town of Enfield along with the towns of Dana, Greenwich, and Prescott plus several smaller villages, was discontinued in March, 1938, to allow for the construction of this vast drinking water supply reservoir.

The other picture was taken during 1939, after Enfield was dismantled. Throughout the entire Swift River Valley, no buildings of any kind were standing when the reservoir began to fill in August, 1939. Several of the structures in the top photograph may still be seen, however, on sites to which they were removed in communities surrounding Quabbin.

The only physical evidence of Enfield remaining are the terraces of the former Woodlawn Cemetery, on the easterly side of Mt. Ram, near the water’s edge. The former Enfield business district lies under 90 feet of water.

As you view the beauty of Quabbin and its watershed, what this change has meant for those who once called these lands their home. Keeping these lands and waters pure protects the values of Quabbin for water supply and also keeps the trust of those who left the valley so that it could be used for this purpose.

This is a micro cache with only enough room for a long, please bring your own pen/pencil.

* PLEASE RETURN IT EXACTLY THE WHERE YOU FOUND IT!! * THANKS
