Geocache Description:

The Penny Pines Program was initiated in California in 1941. Under the sponsorship of the San Francisco Sportswomen's Association in 1941 and succeeding years, school children of the San Mateo County Schools made the first contribution used for reforestation on the Shasta-Trinity National Forests in northern California. At the start of the program in 1941, seedlings could be produced for about 1 cent each. Now, of course, the cost of reforestation has grown, and the project looks for contributions (the minimum is $68). The program is a statewide conservation project supported by numerous individuals and organizations. Garden clubs, women's clubs, men's service organizations, youth groups and schools have all cooperated to help keep California's forests green and growing. You will find this site easily, as the project erects a dedication sign that shows the contributors. To recognize the "penny" theme, the cache contains a steel cent from 1943. Also check out information on the early 19th century flume. You do not need to go inside the fence or gate.
