Geocache Description:

You are looking for a bison tube at the historic Daniel Groves Cemetery located on the southeastern edge of Winchester.

The Daniel Groves Cemetery first incorporated in 1887 served the Winchester African American community. Many military veterans from the Spanish American War, the Civil War as well as World Wars One and Two are burried here. One of the most notable veterans buried here is Spencer Turner, he was a member of the Union Colored US Volunteers during the Civil War. The cemetery fell into disrepair in the 1970's, becomming overgrown with weeds, vines, and trees. A 1985 story in the Winchester Sun noted how a family had to hack their way through the thicket to find a burial spot for a deceased loveone. After the story there were some organized efforts to clean up the cemetery but, with both financial and worker shortfalls all those efforts failed. In the 1990's noting the deplorable shape of the cemetery Ed Burtner, then City Manager of Winchester along with Marie Ganey Benton led the efforts to reclaim the cemetery. Grants were obtained and several hours were spent on the cleanup of the cemetery. Today the cemetery has been completly cleaned up and is both a beautiful and respectful place to honor those buried there.
