A cache and dash for people visiting Leeds Castle or the surrounding area. Placed during one of the famous Henry VIII jousting tournaments, held at the castle twice a year.
This cache is on The Leeds Castle Estate but has been placed on a public footpath so anyone can get to it without the need to intrude on the private areas of the estate.
Those of you visiting the castle can most easily get to the cache by taking the path through The Beech Plantation (a short walk from the main entrance) and across the golf course.
The Eighth hole of course!!!
The castle currently operates a pay once for unlimited visits to the site for one year and is well worth it if you are local. We have visited the castle loads of times and there is always something new and exciting to discover - Great for little cachers.
Visit the web site at - www.leeds-castle.com for details about the castle and it's special events.
For the rest of you parking is available close to the cache, at The Park Gate Inn, which is a nice pub to celebrate your find in.
The cache is about three feet off the footpath and those with a good cacher's eye will find it easily, so there is no need to trespass or upset the nice people at The castle or the golf course.
Please keep to the footpaths - There is no access to the cache through the golf course so a short walk on the road side is necessary to find the footpath.
Why "Joust 4 Fun - Henry's Eighth @ Leeds Castle"?
Built in 1119 by Robert De Crevecoeur to replace the earlier Saxon manor of Esledes, the castle became a royal palace for King Edward I of England and his queen, Eleanor of Castile in 1278. Major improvements were made during his time, including the barbican, made up of three parts, each with its own entrance, drawbridge, gateway, and portcullis. The medieval keep is called the "Gloriette" in honour of Queen Eleanor.
In 1321, King Edward II besieged the castle after his queen was refused admission, and used ballistas, or springalds, to force its defenders to surrender. Richard II's first wife, Anne of Bohemia, spent the winter of 1381 at the Castle on her way to be married to the King, and in 1395, King Richard II received the French chronicler Jean Froissart there, as Froissart described in his Chronicles.
Henry VIII transformed the castle for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and a painting commemorating his meeting with Francis I of France still hangs there. His daughter, Queen Elizabeth I was imprisoned in the castle for a time before her coronation.
Henry VIII is often seen wandering about the estate during special events, like the jousting events and meet the Tudors events.
Coincidentally the cache is close to the 8th hole on the castle's nine hole golf course.
Please enjoy the cache, respect the private areas of the estate, trade fairly and re-hide carefully. Thank you.
