Rivierduinen zijn een vrij zeldzaam fenomeen
in het Nederlandse landschap. De meeste rivierduinen zijn aan het
einde van de laatste ijstijd, zo'n 10.000 jaar geleden, ontstaan.
Rivieren ondergingen toen grote seizoensgebonden
schommelingen.
Rivierbeddingen konden tijdens de zomer grotendeels droog
vallen, waardoor het zand in de bedding kon opwaaien en
verplaatsen. Direct ernaast was echter al voldoende begroeiing om
het zand vast te houden. Zo ontstonden er direct naast de
rivieroever de rivierduinen. In het westen van het land zijn de
meeste rivierduinen later bedekt met andere rivierafzettingen en
veen, maar in het oosten van het land liggen de rivierduinen nog
wel aan de oppervlakte. Een rivierduin dat boven de klei uitsteekt
noemen we een donk.
Langs de IJssel komen op veel plaatsen hoge
rivierduinen voor. De meeste zijn gevormd in de overgangsperiode
van de Weichsel-ijstijd naar het warmere Holoceen.
Niet alle rivierduinen zijn overigens op de overgang van de
ijstijden naar het Holoceen ontstaan. Er zijn er ook die veel
jonger zijn en van de laatste duizend jaar dateren. Zo ook bij de
Vreugderijkerwaard, vlakbij Zwolle.
Deze earthcache voert u dus naar die
rivierduinen, in het natuurgebied
Vreugderijkerwaard.
Dit punt is alleen voor fietsers en wandelaars bereikbaar.
Om deze earthcache te mogen loggen geldt:
- Maak een foto bij het informatiebord, met je team en GPS in
beeld.
Beantwoordt daarnaast de volgende vragen:
- Wat is ongeveer de afstand tussen het punt waar u staat tot de
zichtbare rivierduin (aan het begin van het "eiland")?
- Welke vogel en twee planten zijn vermeld met illustratie?
- Hoe vaak komt het woord rivierduinen voor op het
informatiebord?
Neem ook even de tijd om naar het water te lopen, het zicht op de
rivierduin is fantastisch!
Log de cache met de gemaakte foto en stuur de
antwoorden in een mail naar de maker.

Riverdunes are a rare phenomena in the Dutch
country side. Most of the riverdunes were formed at the end of the
last ice age, approximately 10.000 years ago. At that time,
riverdunes were subject to heavy swings of seasons.
The river-beds could fall dry during the
summer which enabled the sand in the river-bed to be transported by
the wind. Directly at the side there already was enough vegetation
to hold the sand. This is how just close the banks of the river,
riverdunes were formed. In the eastern part of the Netherlands,
these riverdunes still can be found at the surface, where in the
western part they mostly have been covered with other sediments
from the river. A riverdune that is visible above the clay is
called a “donk”.
Along the River IJssel many high riverdunes
can be found. Most of them have been formed in the transition
period from the Weichselien ice age to the warmer Holocene. But not
all riverdunes have been formed at that time. Some of them are much
younger and date from the last thousand years. They can be found in
the Vreugderijkerwaard, northwest of the town of Zwolle.
This earthcache takes you to those riverdunes
in the nature resort of
Vreugderijkerwaard.
This spot can only be reached by pedestrians or cyclists.
To log this cache, you will have to do the
following:
- Take a picture at the information panel with this panel, your
team and GPS on it.
Apart from that answer the following questions:
- What is approximately the distance from the point you are
standing to the visible riverdune (where the island begins)?
- What bird and two plants are named with illustration?
- How many times the word "rivierduinen" (riverdunes) is
mentioned?
Also take the time to walk to the border of the river, there you
will have a fantastic view at the riverdune!
