Geocache Description:

Major Abner Carmichael commanded the defense of the left wing as General Lawrence O. Branch and his 4000 Confederate troops tried to withstand the assault by 12,000 Union tr oops commanded by General Ambrose Burnside, who were determined to capture the city of New Bern, North Carolina. The date was March 14, 1862.

The Battle of New Bern was the baptism of fire for North Carolina's 26th Regiment. Major Carmichael's valiant stand was in vain; he fell along with many of his comrades, and the Union forces swept into New Bern, a key point along an important railroad line. Later, at Gettysburg, the 26th would sustain the largest numerical losses of any unit, North or South, during the entire course of the Civil War. From the parking lot, head into the wooded park. The coordinates are spot on, so let your GPS guide you to the cache, which is about 20 feet off a well-developed trail. PLEASE LEAVE THIS CACHE IN AN ORIENTATION LEAST LIKELY TO BE SEEN FROM THE TRAIL. Thanks.
