Geocache Description:

A long multi-cache in the centre of Heraklion visiting the busts or statues of famous Cretan people of the Arts.

The total walk is about 1.5 km long. Enjoy!

1. First stop: go to: N 35 20.042 - E 025 08.119.

Here you are in front of the bust of a composer and singer from the village of Anoghia on Mt Psiloritis. He was part of the movement that brought down the Greek military Junta of 1967. His songs and music captured and described the Greek psyche and demeanour. Unfortunately he died in 1980 from a brain tumour causing great sorrow to all Greeks.

Find A: How many letters are there in his full name IN GREEK?
Don’t worry if your Greek is not the best! Look carefully and the answer is there.*
(* Mind that the 3rd symbol in his inscribed family name is two (2) letters!)

Find B: How many sitting benches are there in the area of the bust?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Second stop: Go to: N 35 20.(158+A) – E 025 08.(004+B)

You are in front of a strange statue, a bronze sculpture complex depicting a moment from a romance consisting of 10,012 fifteen-syllable-rhymed verses, called Erotokritos. Since its composition and up to nowadays it has been a song in the lips of all Cretans. It was written in the early 17th century by ??

Find C: How many letters are there in the poet’s family name IN GREEK?
A helping hint: The Square you are standing on has got his name.

Find D: How many heads can you see in the whole sculpture?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Third stop: Go to: N 35 20.(386+C) – E 025 07.(989+D)

You are in front of the bust of a worldwide famous painter known with his nickname, a reference to his Greek origin. The artist, however, normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters. He was born in Fodele, Crete but he worked in Italy and mainly in Spain.
Two of his paintings are exhibited in the Historical Museum of Heraklion, www.historical-museum.gr/

Find E: How many letters are there in the artist’s full name IN GREEK? Look carefully and the answer is there.

Find F: How many sitting benches are there around the bust?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Fourth stop: Go to: N 35 20.(202+E) - E 025 08.(184+F)

You are in front of the bust of the most important and most translated Greek writer and philosopher of the 20th century. Yet he did not become well known globally until the 1964 release of the Michael Cacoyannis film Zorba the Greek, based on his novel whose English translation has the same title.*
(* There is another cache by his tomb, GC1HTAH)

Find G: How many letters are there in the writer’s full name IN GREEK? Again look carefully and the answer is there.

Find H: How many palm trees are there around the bust?

You are in front of a big statue of a man who had nothing to do with art but played an important role in Modern Greek history. He was an eminent revolutionary, a prominent and illustrious statesman as well as a charismatic leader in the early 20th century. He was elected several times as Prime Minister of Greece. He had such profound influence on the internal and external affairs of Greece that he is credited with being "the maker of modern Greece". His impact on modern Greece has been such that he is still widely known as the "Ethnarch".

Find I: How many letters are there in the man’s full name IN GREEK? The answer is there, as usual.

Find J: How many steps are there for someone to approach the statue?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. The cache – at last!

Go to: N 35 20.(225+I) - E 025 08.(225+J)

The cache is a micro rectangular plastic container.
