Number 3 of a series of four caches, leading to a fifth, bonus cache. Don't forget to collect the numbers for the bonus! New location Dec 30th 2010, due to muggle activity.
This is a short series of caches, all on Andersey Island. They are a replacement for the Andersey Island multi cache, GCVJZP, which sadly was crushed when the tree it was in fell in a storm. There are four caches in the series, plus a final bonus cache if you collect the information in the other four. Combining these with other Abingdon caches creates a round walk which can be completed in an easy three hours. The walk is accessible to an all terrain buggy, an umbrella type might struggle in places.
Andersey Island is a large island (about 273 acres) in the River Thames above Culham Lock. The island is created by a division in the stream of the river between the main navigation channel and the Swift Ditch backwater. The Swift Ditch used to be the main course of the Thames until navigation was diverted to Abingdon. The current course of the river was constructed, probably by the monks of Abingdon Abbey, in the 8th and 9th century, but did not become the primary route until 1788.
Walking on from Andersey Island 2 you will get a view of the Old Gaol. This was opened as the Berkshire county gaol in 1811, having been constructed by prisoners during the Napoleonic wars. It was a prison for fifty years. In 1974 the building opened as a leisure centre, closing in 2002. It is currently awaiting redevelopment.
Pass back under the bridge and follow the river to Cache 3. Opposite the cache site you will see the Abingdon outdoor pool, and the Abbey grounds park. The porta-cabin building next to the pool is the Abbey Brass band hut. Maxi Mammoth plays in there on a Tuesday night, so if you hear melodic tunes, it’s probably him.
