History of the Cane Lift.
The original cane lift was constructed around 1911 and was used to lift whole stick bundles of sugarcane that were cut by hand onto railway wagons. By 1972 most local farmers were moving to the new type Chopper Cane Harvesters which were attached to tractors. The cane lift was no longer needed as these new machines deposited the cane directly into cane bins. The bins could be towed on trailers behind the harvesters and then unloaded directly onto the rail line to be taken by locomotives to the sugar mill. These original type Chopper harvesters were the pre cursor to the big modern Cane Harvesters we see used today.
The Cane Lift was destroyed by fire in October 2001 and this replica was rebuilt and commissioned in July 2003 with the help and support of the Local Community, the former Mirani Shire Council and Mackay Sugar Ltd.
The cache is a 200ml sistema container. You will need your own pen. Very small swaps only.
