Rainbow Spirit: I checked the cache today and it was melted, and surrounded by charred trees, time to go.

In Cantello Reserve, Hammondville
On 31st May 1942 three Japanese midget submarines, the M14, M21 & M24 were launched from their 'mother' submarines the I 22, I 24, & I 27, off the coast of Sydney and staged a famous raid on Sydney Harbour, exactly 67 years ago from the date the cache was placed.
Eight days later the I 21 & I 24 surfaced off the coast and shelled Newcastle and Sydney respectively.
1st Lt George Cantello of the US Army Airforce was scrambled from Bankstown airfield to attack the I 24, in his Bell P39 Airacobra, tragically he crashed soon after, near the site of this cache and was killed on impact.
A monument to him and the Australian sailors killed in the harbour raid was erected here in 1988.
This site is also the home of one of Sydney's last remaining freshwater swamps and intertidal wetlands.
