Geocache Description:

Salem Beverly Waterway Canal The cache is a small lock 'n lock container located near the Salem Beverly Waterway Canal. The cache is winter-friendly and flood resistant. Depending on the time of year and weather, you may need to boat, wade or walk in swampy land.

The canal is located in Topsfield and Wenham, Massachusetts and was built in 1917 to carry water from the Ipswich River, Topsfield, to Wenham. The canal passes through the center of the Wenham Swamp and offers the possibility of seeing a wide variety of birds.

Access to the cache is by water or land. By water, you can put in a kayak or canoe from one of the public Ipswich River boat launches. If you use the suggested boat launching waypoints, expect a 4 - 6 hour trip. By land, there are public trails alongside the canal which are accessed from Wenham. If hiking from Wenham, plan on a 1.5 mile hike from the P1 waypoint.
