Geocache Description:

Chain of Ponds Township, off Route 27 north of Eustis.

The sign says "State of Maine, Public Reserved Land, Chain of Ponds Unit". Plenty of parking by the sign or you can drive down the not-too-bad road, a few rocks, maybe a mud puddle or two. Primitive campsites are at the end of the road and people even take camping trailers to the sites. And modern conveniences have been added since I was last here, an outhouse!

The cache is a medium sized Lock & Lock. Mostly moosey items are in it. Right across from the cache is a beautiful view of Bag Pond and the mountains. It will only take a very short time to get to the end of the road, check out the campsites, stand at the narrows and look down Lower Pond and up Bag Pond. Come back here to camp sometime!

Chain of Ponds ends at the dam at the south end of Lower Pond , where water spills over the dam to form the start of the Dead River. Heading north there is Bag Pond, then a long winding passage to Long Pond; Natanis Pond, Round Pond, Horseshoe Stream and Arnold Pond.

This place is "cool" not only for its beauty and the many moose trails but also for the NW wind that funnels between the mountains and howls down the lake in the autumn. I remember standing here one day in the evergreen-scented breeze and thinking I never wanted to leave. When they used to have the Dead River Canoe and Kayak Race in May, they sometimes had to break the ice in the ponds for the race to begin. And I have walked through deep snow drifts here, also in May. So it is indeed, a very "cool" spot. FTF: Laker 121 & NL Calendar from NB!
