Geocache Description:

Casche to commemorate the actions of 17 June 1863 between Cavalry forces under the Union Command of Brig Gen Kilpatrick and Confederate Col Munford.

A prelude to Gettysburg, the Battle of Aldie was a fight between Cavalry forces. Lee had taken to the Shenendoah Valley in his march to the the north after the Battle at Chancellorsville (30 April - 6 May). Confederate Cavalry was to screen these movements and prevent the Union Cavalry from breaking through and reporting on the position of the main army.

The result of the action was inconclusive, but the Southern forces inflicted more casualties than they received.

The 1st Mass Cavalry was decimated at this position on the field, losing almost 200 of the 300 engaged. The stone monument commerorates this unit. Take a moment to look at it.

Markers at the site show positions of forces for the battle. A nice read of only a few minutes. Hey, your all the way out here, why not take some time to read them!

Cache is at a small pulloff on the Snickersville Pike, part of the scenic Virginia Byway. Nice views can be had from the pulloff as well as.

Easy to get to, but the last few steps can be a bit tricky, especially after a rain or if dew is present. Please be careful and rehide as found. Cache will be a little easier in the winter than in the summer.
