Geocache Description:

Keep your eyes out for the Bunyip!! When finding this cache he might be anywhere.

Please note that you don't access the cache through the school on 5th ave W. This is fenced off. See parking info below. Thanks!

My kids and I were geocaching in these woods, and we rounded a bend in the path. Up ahead was something I never expected to see. He was about 4 or 5 feet long, and had the head of a dog, scales on his stomach and hair on his back. He had flipper like front legs, very human like back legs, and a long tail. This might strike you as a strange creature to see, but for me it was actually something familiar. It was a Bunyip, and I had seen them before in the Australian outback, but never here in America.

He raised his head and looked at us. I called to him, “G’day Mate, what are you doing so far from home?”

Hearing my Australian accent, the Bunyip calmed down and smiled at us. He then told us his story.

As a young Bunyip in Australia, he had lived with his parents in a Billabong (a kind of small lake or bog). But unlike most Bunyips, who just want to hide in the Billabong and eat sheep and kangaroos that fall into the water, he wanted to travel and see the world. So at the young Bunyip age of 126, (Bunyips usually stay home with their parents until 140) he snuck out of the Billabong and made his way to the coast. There he hid on a large freighter, and began his journey around the world.

He traveled to the dark forests of Indonesia, the bright lights of London and Paris, the steamy jungles of remote Africa, and the high mountains of Peru. Finally he came to the Pacific Northwest, and fell in love with the ancient forests around Seattle. He decided this was where he wanted to spend the rest of his life.

He traveled from forest to forest, traveling up and down the Cascades and the Olympic Mountains. Finally he arrived at this little patch of forest, and met another strange bloke, the local Sasquatch. Sasquatch and he had a lot in common, and they soon became fast friends. Bunyip decided to live with Sasquatch here in these woods.

So keep your eyes out when you are searching for this Cache. You just might see Bunyip, or even his friend Sasquatch. They are very shy, but if you are extra careful, you might spot them. If you see Bunyip, call out “G’day Mate” and maybe he will stop and tell you his story. He might even offer you a cracker with Vegemite, or maybe even a meat pie, his favorite things.

The cache is hidden exactly where we first saw Bunyip. It is an ammo can, and contains a nice flashlight for the FTF gift, as well as some other goodies. We are excited to hear about your trips to the Bunyip Woods, and let us know if you see him or Sasquatch!

You will want to park at the end of 7th ave west, (to the south of the cache on the map) and then hike in. You only have to hike around 400 or 500 yards, and the terrain is wooded and beautiful. One short steeper spot but should be a 2 difficulty. The actual hide is only a yard off the trail, so no bushwhacking required, and you should never need to leave a trail.
