Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches in Calais, Vermont. Inside each cache in this series is a clue that will help lead you to This is Vermont: Calais.

About Maple Corner:
Maple Corner has boasted its name for more than 150 years and was one of the first parts of Calais to be settled. Located at the southeast corner of Curtis Pond, Maple Corner owes its existence to this body of water and the mill industries it helped power. In the early 19th century, the village hosted saw and grist mills. Later, in the 1870's, a woolen mill and machine shop which produced horse rakes, appeared. Around 1910, a carriage factory here was converted to a creamery which served nearby farms. Not far from the cache, there exists a general store which can provide provisions. While ownership has changed, this country store has been open continuously since around 1900, when the business was started by George Mann in nearby Kents Corner.

In slightly more recent history, the Maple Corner Community Center experienced some degree of fame over a fundraiser. The money raised was hoped to assist in restoring the community center, which was forced to cancel its "Full Monty" spinoff play, "The Full VerMonty", in 1999 due to fire code reasons at the community center. The result was a 2002 calendar called "The Men of Maple Corners" which featured local residents baring all. The fundraiser received nationwide media attention and raised over a half-million dollars.
