The cultures of the First Peoples of Canada have greatly influenced and shaped our country. Throughout history, Indigenous people have maintained a special relationship with the land, the water, the air, as well as all animal and plant life. Their contribution to Canada has been one that is rich and diverse.
The Wetland Discovery Centre endeavors to honor this history and the cultures of Indigenous people by incorporating philosophies, teachings, and values of North American Indigenous People (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) into the daily activities of the Discovery Centre. To celebrate the culture and teachings of Indigenous people, the Discovery Centre works hard to:
- Ensure education programs meet the expectations of Manitoba schools and educators with respect to Indigenous content in the curriculum
- Collaborate with Indigenous communities and people to develop special events, workshops and exhibits
- Develop Indigenous school-based programs based on the central themes of respect for and relationship with nature.
By celebrating and sharing the culture and teachings of the Indigenous peoples of Canada, we have an opportunity to promote respect for all living things. It is also an opportunity to discover the accomplishments and history of Indigenous people, and thereby cultivate a sense of pride in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
