Geocache Description:

This is the first cache of a series of caches called "The Heart Of Oak Series". These caches are named after ships that have connections to the greater Saint John Area, either built here at the Saint John Shipbuilding Yard, or that have names similar to areas around Saint John.

This cache is named after Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) BRAS D'OR. Now you may ask why this ship has connections to Saint John, since its named after lakes in Cape Breton. Alexander Graham Bell did testing on Hydrophoils on those lakes, and his testing evetually led to the Royal Canadian Navy to consider the potential of the use of Hydrophoils to hunt submarines during the Cold War. Well the ship was commisioned still as a prototype, and only one was built. It was later mothballed and put into crown assets for future potential use. It never even completed its weapons trials. However, with Defence cutbacks it was then set to be scrapped. The ship was then saved by a Maritime Museum in Quebec. This ship was not forgotten. In 1979 the Sea Cadet unit 268 RCSCC BRAS D'OR was formed in Rothesay. They trained out of Lakefield Elementry until 2006, when they moved to the Fairvale Outing Assc. and have been there ever since. The Cadets can be seen tagging for the local Royal Canadian Legion every November leading to November 11th, also as the Cenataph Guard at the Kennebacasis Remembrance Day ceremony every year, marching in the Christmas Parade and numerous other events around the KV.
