De första vattenkraftverken härstammar från Kina. Först framåt 1200-talet började vattenkraften komma till användning i Sverige. Genom att utnyttja det rinnande vattnet i älvarna så kunde man ta bättre vara på våra naturtillgångar, framförallt skogen och malmen. Den första vattendrivna elgeneratorn kom till Sverige 1882. Sverige var det första landet i Europa som fick elektricitet. Tack vare vattenkraften var Sverige det första landet i världen som fick eldrivna tåg. De flesta vattenkraftverken i världen är byggda under 1950 och 1960-talen. Sverige har idag ungefär 1800 vattenkraftverk.

By using the flowing water in rivers, so you could raise on our natural resources, particularly forests and ore. The first water-powered elgeneratorn came to Sweden in 1882. Sweden was the first country in Europe that had electricity. Thanks to hydropower, Sweden was the first country in the world who received electric trains. Most water utilities in the world are built in the 1950s and 1960s. Sweden currently has approximately 1800 hydro.
