Samtidigt som hungersnöd och fattigdom drabbade Småland fann man guld i Kalifornien. Många sålde hus och hem, och for över Atlanten till Amerika för att finna lyckan. Verkligheten blev för många en annan, för det var ytterst få som fann guld och än färre som blev rika. Några av de fann lyckan var Johan Brynteson, Eric Lindblom och Jafet Lindberg. Dessa herrar kom att kallas ”Three Lucky Swedes”, även om Jafet Lindberg var norrman.

While hunger and poverty struck Småland gold was found in California. Many sold their house and home, and went over the Atlantic to America to find happiness. The reality was for many another, for there were very few who found gold and even fewer who became rich. Some who found fortunes was Johan Brynteson, Eric Lindblom and Jafet Lindberg. These gentlemen came to be called "Three Lucky Swedes," even if Jafet Lindberg was Norwegian.
