The mission and activities of Polk Museum of Art have grown and evolved dramatically since its founding in 1966. When the Junior Welfare League founded the Imperial Youth Museum in a vacant church building on Walnut, just off of Lake Morton. The mission of the organization was largely directed toward young people. In 1969 the organizational mission was expanded to serve all ages of the community population. Reflecting this change in the scope of programming, the Imperial Youth Museum was renamed Polk Public Museum in 1981, and its emphasis was broadened to include art, history and science.

As the scope of the Museum expanded, so did its need for a larger home. In 1970, through the generosity of Publix founder George W. Jenkins, the museum acquired an old Publix grocery store that was located on the current property (facing Palmetto), doubling the exhibition and classroom space.

In the early 1980s Polk Public Museum’s Director and members of both the Board of Trustees (governing board) and Board of Governors (advisory board) began an intensive long-range planning process. In 1987, the name of the Museum was changed to Polk Museum of Art, reflecting the revision of the mission to focus on visual arts and emphasizing the Museum’s commitment to countywide audiences. That same year work began on the current museum facility, which was formally dedicated in September 1988 and which opened to the public debt-free.

The Lake Morton Grammar School was completed in 1914 and began operation in January 1915. The school was in service until destroyed by fire on February 21, 1963. The building was razed and on March 2, 1964, the City Commission approved a motion to acquire the site to build a new library. Originally opened March 14, 1912, the Lakeland Public Library opened its doors at its new location on the corner of Lake Morton Drive and Palmetto on May 2, 1966.

The First To Find Lakeland Series is a project designed to motivate those cachers who are quick enough to snag an FTF to hide their own FTF geocache in the Lakeland area. There is a similar series FTF Series Florida that is all over the place. Since there have been a lot of Lakeland caches that have been archived a new series has been started to help replenish the Lakeland area.

Whoever is the FTF at a FTF cache is encouraged to keep the series moving forward by hiding the next cache in the FTF series, numbering the cache accordingly. The only twist is that you have to place the new FTF cache within the borders of I-4 and the Polk Parkway.

There are no limits on the type of cache created. If you are FTF, please do your part to expedite this series' growth! All of you FTF hounds know who you are! If, however, you are FTF and are unable or unwilling to continue this series, please make it clear in your online log that you are passing on the option to the next finder. There is no obligation to participate! Hope you have fun with it!

If after a few days of posting a new FTF cache and it hasn't shown up in the FTF Series Lakeland bookmark list drop g8orRaiders a gentle reminder to add your cache to the list.

FTF FOR #14 HONORS GO TO LITTLE GIZMO! He had EXTRA Fun and now gets to place #15!
