Geocache Description:

Cache is located on top of Boyer Mountain. To get to this cache follow Westside Calispell Rd from Hwy 211 to Middle Fork Rd, then in to NF 3520. Follow NF 3520 mostly S/SW past Power Lake and Power Peak to the end (where the gate is), and hike the rest. It's almost entirely an uphill hike, about an hour up 900' in elevation to 5265'. Bring liquid refreshment at minimum for the hike. If you find the US Geological Survey marker that is in plain sight (if there's no snow), you're within 60'.

This cache was bound for Power Peak until I went out to place it and changed my mind at the last minute, deciding to put it on top of Boyer Mountain instead. Oh well, it's already marked Power Peak and I couldn't change it without making another trip, so I'm calling it Power Peak/Boyer Mountain, seeing as how you'd almost have to stop at Power Lake for a minute on the way in or out, you'll pass right below Power Peak, and you'll definitely need some leg power to get to the cache. When exploring out in this area, it is important to note that even the most current maps cease to be correct once you venture past the closed gate. It is not difficult to see which way to go if you're paying attention, but don't rely on the roads shown on your gps actually being there. There are roads almost to the top of the mountain, then I followed pretty well established game/hiking trails the last almost 1/2 a mile straight up to the top. The last 1/2 mile approached the top from the North face of Boyer Mountain. As far as I have seen, and I've looked and explored quite a bit, there is currently no shorter hike in from any other road or direction. The entire walk, assuming you drive something to the gate, is just under 5 miles, and can be completed round trip to and from the gate in about an hour and a half if you don't stay and have a picnic at the top of the mountain. There is a US Geological Survey marker in the top of a relatively flat rock about 60' NE of the cache, it is marked Y1930 and gives the elevation at that spot as 5265'. It is located at N 48 deg. 11.833' by W 117 deg. 26.062' if you want help finding it. The cache is an ammo box and I seeded it with quite a few various helpful items and trinkets. This is a great area for an ATV, MX, or mountain bike, and while I would recommend a 4x4 at least for the drive in, it can be done in a car as long as there is no snow left. The time of year that the snow is gone varies, but this year it was gone by late May. There are moose, deer, rabbits, chipmunks, and bear in this area, so be alert. I had two close encounters with a Mother and baby moose on the day I placed this cache.
