Geocache Description:

Woodland with steepish track

Pennal Village got its name from the Romans who came here in 43AD and established a fort at Cefn-Caer to the south east of the present village. The church was originally built in the sixth century but later it was dedicated to St Peter ad Vincula (St Peter in Chains) and is one of only two so dedicated in the UK. It has a circular churchyard which is itself worth a visit with a statue of Owain Glyndwr in the Heritage Garden and in the Church an explanation of the significance of his famous Pennal letter seeking the support of the Pope and the King of France written while at the medieval manor house at Cefn-Caer or at the castle of Domen Las, the motte of which you will pass on the way to the cache.

If you park in the village you can follow the driveway of the Plas Talgarth timeshare complex (you could drive if you want to visit the Farmhouse Bar which is open to non residents), join the "Trim Trail" into the woods and having found the cache continue through the gate and along the public footpath past Penmaendovey and Penmaenbach to Yr Ynys farm and then down to the Dyfi taking in the cache "Dyfi see our
Ospreys" (GC1E6FE). From there you can follow the path along the flood bank upstream along the Dyfi until you reach the Pennal River where the path takes you back to the village. This is a 3 mile walk which can be rather muddy by the river but very good regarding birdlife with all probability of seeing Red Kites and if you are lucky from Spring to August the Ospreys may be at their nest across the river (see the notes on the "Osprey" cache). The "Trim Trail" is usually open and the no entry signs apply to some of the paths off.

The terrain rating, less than an hour and stroller accessible attributes only apply as far as the cache and not to the continuation to the Dyfi.

Dogs only on leads please.

Please take care not to damage the covering of the cache. If there is any problem the managers of the Plas Talgarth estate are aware of the cache and I am grateful to them for allowing it to be there.
